Alternative Version of the Assessment

An alternative version of the assessment has been created for students with special education needs, including students with a visual impairment, or students with special circumstances. This version contains single-selection questions only. The alternative version of the assessment is available in multiple formats. If a student requires one or more of the following formats, the school administrator will indicate that the student has an accommodation in the e-assessment system and then select the format of the alternative version of the assessment.  

The following formats of the alternative version are available for the sample test and the operational assessment: 

  • A Unified English Braille (contracted or uncontracted with printable regular- or large-print PDF).
    • EQAO requires 5 to 7 business days to process a request for this format.  
  • A printable format (regular or large print) of the assessment for students who are unable to complete the assessment online, including for example, when using a third-party accessibility software, such as the downloadable Kurzweil version.
    • EQAO requires 3 business days to process a request for this format.  
  • An alternative online format including audio with full descriptions of all mathematics graphics, for students with low vision who are able to access the assessment online. This format can also be used with the Braille or paper formats of the assessment.
  • An alternative online format including audio without full descriptions of all mathematics graphics, for students who are able to access the assessment online and cannot complete the various types of questions in the assessment (e.g., drop-down or drag-and-drop questions). This format can also be used with the Braille or paper formats of the assessment.
  • MP3 audio with full descriptions of all mathematics graphics, for students with low vision, to be used with the Braille or paper formats of the assessment. This audio format contains separate MP3 files that are provided by EQAO for students who cannot access the audio descriptions in the online alternative format.
  • MP3 audio without full descriptions of all mathematics graphics, to be used with the paper format of the assessment. This audio format contains separate MP3 files that are provided by EQAO for students who cannot access the audio descriptions in the online alternative version.

IMPORTANT: All responses to questions in any alternative format must be entered into the e-assessment platform. To input student responses into the e-assessment platform, three options are available if a format of the alternative version is used:

  1. The student, if able, can enter their responses directly into the e-assessment platform as the student completes the assessment.
  2. The scribe, if one is assigned to the student, can enter the student’s responses directly into the e-assessment platform as the student completes the assessment.
  3. The teacher, if the student or scribe is not able to enter any responses into the e-assessment platform as the student completes the assessment, must sign into the e-assessment platform using the student’s sign in information, when the student has completed the session or stage, and transcribe the student’s responses directly into the e-assessment platform. It is important to transcribe the student’s responses exactly as the student has identified.
